Gagliano del Capo...
a quiet village in southern Puglia!
Villa Torre Bianca, a pearl of design, was designed by architect Lorenzo Grifantini, the head of DOS Architects, an established architecture firm based in London and an international portfolio. With the aim of escaping the hustle and bustle of London city life, they wanted to create an oasis of peace for their family in a place they love the most: Salento.
This white tower is not just a house, but a life experience. The interplay of architecture and natural elements, inside and outside, creates an environment that speaks for mental wellbeing.
Villa Torre Bianca, a fantastic property far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life; deliberate architectural simplicity and in the shade of the courtyard of this cool-modern enclave in Puglia, cacti have taken a bath. The design of the house consists of white walls and sharp corners as a backdrop for simple accents: a woven lantern, a wire chair, a reduced look from a design magazine.
The heart of this villa is outdoors, in a courtyard with a swimming pool, built-in BBQ and a 12-person dining room under a woven pergola, where sunlight and shade are constantly changing. Follow the steps along the tower and enjoy views across the city to Salento sea And light the gas fireplace after sunset.
The architect Lorenzo Grifantini designed the house based on other buildings in the area. The courtyard is modelled on traditional houses in the area, and the tower is modelled on that of a church. Inside, however, the economical decor allows light to flow across the floor, interrupted only by built-in sofas in the living room, a table in the dining room and an island in the fully equipped kitchen. The residence is located in the center of Gagliano del Capo, where all services are within walking distance. The sea can be reached via a steep path in 10 minutes. All other beaches and famous cities can be reached within 10 to 20 minutes by car.
La Torre Bianca has received a number of design awards. These include the winners of the National In/Architecture Prize for 2020, which was created by INARCH, the Italian Chamber of Architects, for the best building built in Italy in the last five years, which said of La Torre Bianca that it “expresses an exceptional ability to fit into a strongly characterized historical context of the city of Gagliano del Capo. The architecture reinforces the contemporary nature of the linguistic and typological solutions, but does not easily give in to imitation and banal contextualism, but expresses its modernity with quality.”
The ecological aspect was also taken into account: The house is one meter above ground level and allows natural ventilation, even from below. The presence of sliding windows with double glazing favors natural ventilation in all rooms of the house. The impressive height of the rooms (4 m) promotes the exchange of hot and cold air in the house. Air circulation and ventilation are integral parts of the entire house construction. The walls are thick (45 cm) and provide the necessary thermal mass of the entire building.
